During the visit we will cover the history of Sicily starting from the 12th century B.C. to the present day. Some of the archaeological emergencies we will visit: the largest final bronze necropolis in Europe, with its 5,000 artificial cave tombs; the Byzantine villages of San Micidiario and San Nicolicchio, with their 4th-century rock churches; the Anaktoron or prince’s palace, seat of local power from the 12th century B.C.; remains of a Greek trench; the narrow-gauge “Ciccio Pecora” railroad, in operation until the last century.
Among the botanical emergencies we will meet: endemic Iblean flora; wild orchids; plants characteristic of the Mediterranean scrub.
For each plant we will see therapeutic, medicinal, phytoalimurgical and toxic uses.
All set in an imposing Miocene limestone-marly massif bounded by the Anapo River and its tributary Calcinara.
If the weather permits we can bathe in the cool waters of the Calcinara, and visit one of the active karst caves in the area.
Nature, history and archaeology for a unique experience.

The city of Noto now Noto Antica is a place where time stood still January 11, 1693, due to the most violent earthquake ever recorded in Italy, the city with all its inhabitants moved downstream, leaving behind only ruins and desolation.
The active factories, of primary importance for the entire community, because of their characteristics are located outside the city in a place rich in spring water, the Carosello Quarry, here the tanneries the gualcherie and the mills exploiting the driving force imparted by the water produced leather leather and textiles, the main source of wealth, but also wheat flour, barley or other grains for food.
Our walk will first take us into the old city and through one of the nine side gates we will visit the remains of the industrious city, now rich in spontaneous vegetation characteristic of the Hyblean Mountains and where the river in fine weather invites us to take a refreshing bath.
The return that will take place from a second access will still make us relive the moments that terrorized the citizens of Noto.

Vendicari: the hotel of the birds
- Contact person: Gregorio Chiarenza
- City: Vendicari

The route, which is easy, runs from the main entrance for about 1 km with an insignificant elevation gain.
Vendicari, the hotel of birds, today represents one of the most representative wetlands in Europe and its importance, from a naturalistic point of view, is recognized internationally.
Of significant importance is the presence of endemic plants, halophytic plants and sclerophytic plants of the Mediterranean maquis: sage-grouse, carob tree, olive tree, mastic tree, myrtle and Juniperus coccolone, which reaches monumental proportions in some stretches.
The route allows the hiker to visit after crossing, the large quagmire: the ancient Swabian Tower of Vendicari, built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries; the tuna fishery, of which substantial structures remain; the salt pans, now a place frequented by countless migratory and resident birds; In the vicinity of the latter, there is a fish processing plant characterized by tanks for the production of “garum,” a typical sauce used by the Greeks and Romans to season food.

Cavagrande the path of the potholes of the giants
- Contact person: Gregorio Chiarenza

The Ibleo promontory, of karst origin, is richly incised by a dense hydro-geographical network.
The erosive action of water has created veritable canyons; among the most interesting and spectacular is surely the Cava Grande del Cassibile, one of the wonders of Sicily, a place where one can simultaneously discover an almost unspoiled nature and the traces that man has left over the millennia.
In this impressive fissure of the planking, the ancient Kakyparis, mentioned by Thucydides when he reports on the retreat of the Athenians as part of the Alatene events of the Peleponnesian War (411-413 B.C.), in its ten kilometers of the middle part, where it reaches the width of about one thousand meters and the depth of three hundred meters, flows and continues to erode with its pristine waters the tender Hyblean limestone, forming the so-called “Uruvi.”
Responsible are the pebbles carried by the current, in their whirling turn crumble, by mechanical action, the rock forming circular basins, small and deep ponds also known by the name of giants’ potholes.
