Plemmirio Marine Protected Area

A few kilometers from Syracuse, you can immerse yourself in a true paradise on earth: the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area, which stretches 12 kilometers around the Maddalena Peninsula. Here, amid mountain biking excursions, walks and unforgettable snorkeling sessions (scuba diving), you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, nestled between sheer cliffs.
The Nature Reserve is a vast protected area on the east coast of Sicily, just a few kilometers from Syracuse. The Plemmirio Marine Park, established in 2004, is divided into three distinct and marked zones based on the level of protection afforded to the area and the activities allowed to tourists and visitors.
The regulations of the PlemmirioMarine Protected Area allow swimming, diving and sport fishing in most of the reserve, such as in the arena classified as Zone B, which includes the Stalactite Cave, the Cheese Cave — so called because of the numerous holes in the walls inside — and the Cave of the Corvine. In contrast, the area in front of the lighthouse, where the Secca del Capo is located, as it is at higher risk, is classified as Zone A. Here, it is therefore not possible to swim, stop with a boat, fish and dive, at any time of the year.
On foot or by bicycle, with the right breaks to indulge in a few moments on the beach, or a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Sicily, you can discover the wonders of the Marine Park thanks to the long Sentiero della Maddalena (Magdalen Path), which crosses the entire Peninsula.
The nature trail starts at Punta Castelluccio, just a stone’s throw from passage 35, and winds for 10 kilometers down to the Cape Murro di Porco Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, and then continues to Via degli Zaffiri at Punta Milocca, where as many as ten passages are found next to each other. If you are looking for a trek from Syracuse, this trail is definitely the best way to discover a dreamy place. You can travel it all in one go, either on foot or by mountain bike, but we suggest you take it slowly so you can take well-deserved breaks for some snorkeling or to relax on the beach.
