In the heart of Ortigia, in Syracuse, lies a hidden treasure: the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo.

A palace rich in history

Palazzo Bellomo, in itself, is a work of art.
Built in the 13th-14th centuries, it has two distinct building phases: the first floor and Gothic portal from the Swabian period, recognizable by the imperial eagle, and the upper floor, dating from the 15th century, with obvious Catalan influences.

A museum that tells the story of Sicily

Since 1948, Palazzo Bellomo has housed the Regional Gallery, which holds a rich heritage of works from Syracuse and southeastern Sicily.
A chronological exhibition will guide you through masterpieces ranging from the Byzantine period to the 18th century.

Among the treasures not to be missed:

  • The Annunciation by Antonello da Messina:An iconic work representing Renaissance figurative culture in Sicily.
Behold the fusion of Flemish analytical vision and Italian perspective in a perfect and original balance.

  • Madonna del Cardillo by Domenico Gagini:A sculpture of great refinement depicting the Madonna and Child with a goldfinch.
Note the meticulous attention to detail and the delicacy of expression.

  • The Martyrdom of Saint Lucy by Mario Minniti:A Baroque painting that captures the eye with its masterful use of contrasts of light and shadow and the realism of the figures.
A work that reveals the influence of Caravaggio.

The Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo is located in Ortigia

in the historic center of Syracuse.
The Regional Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo has a vast collection of works from Syracuse and southeastern Sicily. The museum houses prestigious works that highlight the historical course of Sicilian art from the Byzantine period to the 18th century. The Bellomo Palace is a 13th-14th century building from Catalan foundations. Two construction phases can be seen. The first floor and the Gothic portal are from the Swabian period as evidenced by the Swabian imperial eagle; the upper floor is from the fifteenth century period.

Bellomo Palace and the influence of Catalan art.

In 1365 the palace passed to the Bellomo family, a noble Roman family that arrived in Sicily during the time of Frederick III of Aragon. As can be seen from the construction of the second floor with influences of Catalan art. Mullioned and three-light windows punctuated by slender columns were opened, and the characteristic open staircase was built on the porticoed courtyard, where the severe ogival arches can still be admired. In 1722 the nuns of the nearby monastery of St. Benedict bought it and used it as a storehouse and dormitory. However, the expropriation laws of 1866 and the abolition of religious orders wrested it from its former use until, in 1901, it was turned over to the Fine Arts Administration, which began the first restorations.
